Forest officials rescue elephant calf trapped in rocky crevice in Kerala’s Palakkad
An elephant calf that was found trapped in a rock crevice at Abbannoor in Attappadi, Palakkad, has been successfully rescued by forest officials , who are now making efforts to reunite it with its herd.
The calf was first spotted by tribal residents at around 7:30 am on Tuesday , after it became stuck between rocks. Locals closely monitored the situation throughout the day, waiting for the mother elephant to return, but she did not reappear.
Following the absence of the herd, forest officials reached the site and carried out the rescue operation. The calf is believed to be around 2.5 years old and is suspected to have accidentally slipped into the rocky gap after getting separated from its herd while moving through the forest.
After the rescue, the animal has been placed under close protection within the forest to allow chances of natural reunion with its herd. Officials are continuing to monitor the area in case the herd returns to reclaim the calf.
If the herd does not return, the calf will be shifted to a forest rehabilitation station for further care and protection, officials added.
