Food poisoning suspected as 57 girls from Ahmedabad hostel hospitalised

At least 57 girls from a private hostel in Ahmedabad were hospitalized on Sunday after a suspected case of food poisoning , prompting an investigation by civic authorities. Officials said that 18 students remain admitted , while the others are under medical observation, and all are reported to be in stable condition .

According to Dr Bhavin Solanki , Medical Officer of Health at the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), the affected students are residents of the Saurashtra Patel Girls Hostel located in the Memnagar area. The girls began experiencing symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhoea, and vomiting on Sunday afternoon, following which they were rushed to a nearby private hospital for treatment.

Preliminary findings suggest that the illness may have been caused by contaminated food consumption , though the exact source is yet to be confirmed. Officials indicated that some students had consumed fast food from outside , while others had eaten meals prepared within the hostel premises. This has made it difficult to immediately pinpoint the origin of the contamination.

Civic authorities have since collected food samples from both the hostel kitchen and suspected external sources for laboratory analysis. “A detailed investigation is underway, and we will have a clearer picture once the test results are available,” Solanki said.

The hostel houses around 900 students , raising concerns about food safety and hygiene standards. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further cases and ensure compliance with health regulations.
