Flash Floods, Landslides Disrupt Jammu,Woman Missing as Rescue Teams Launch Search
Heavy rainfall disrupted normal life across Jammu on Sunday, flooding roads and residential areas, damaging vehicles and triggering landslides at several locations. The downpour began around 8.30 am and continued for more than three hours, officials said.
Jammu recorded 185.6 mm of rainfall in three hours, surpassing the previous October record of 160 mm set in 1955, according to officials cited in later reports. The spell also brought the maximum temperature down to 23.3 degrees Celsius, around nine degrees below normal.
A 27-year-old woman went missing in Raipur Domana after being swept away by flash floodwaters while crossing a road with her husband, a resident said. The man survived, while the woman remained untraced at the time of the report. Police and State Disaster Response Force ( SDRF) teams launched a search operation.
A report later said a man’s body, suspected to be that of a person who drowned in a flooded stream in the Domana area, was recovered on Sunday evening. His identity and the exact cause of death had not been established at the time of publication.
Panjtirthi, Nagrota, Roop Nagar, Dogra Chowk, Durga Nagar, Shakti Nagar and Raipur Domana were among the affected localities. Rainwater entered homes and shops, while residents reported damage to cars and two-wheelers. Videos shared on social media showed water rushing through narrow lanes and flooding roads and buildings.
Landslides were reported on the Panjtirthi-Sidrah and Sidrah-Nagrota road stretches, disrupting traffic and causing congestion. Authorities deployed personnel and machinery to remove debris and restore movement. Commuters were advised to use caution on vulnerable routes because of slippery roads and unstable slopes.
Vijay Kumar, a resident of Shakti Nagar, said rainwater flowed through lanes and entered residential areas. Sohan Singh of Domana said roads filled quickly, making movement difficult as families tried to protect their belongings.
Authorities continued monitoring affected areas as rescue teams searched for the missing woman and personnel worked to clear landslide debris. The rainfall caused disruption to transport and daily activities across Jammu.
