Flash Flood Hits Manipur's Churachandpur After Heavy Rain, Thousands Affected

Heavy rainfall lashed Manipur's Churachandpur district on Thursday afternoon, triggering a flash flood that inundated large parts of the district headquarters town and disrupted normal life for thousands of residents. While authorities confirmed that no casualties have been reported, widespread waterlogging and flooding caused significant inconvenience across several localities.

Among the worst-hit areas was Tuibong, where knee-deep floodwaters submerged roads and entered residential neighbourhoods. Officials said that the sudden spell of intense rainfall, coupled with the town's poor drainage system, led to rapid accumulation of water, leaving many areas flooded within a short span.

Several major roads across the town were submerged, bringing vehicular movement to a near standstill and making it difficult for residents to travel. Floodwaters also entered numerous homes, damaging household belongings and forcing families to deal with waterlogged living spaces.

Dozens of vehicles parked inside residential compounds were partially submerged as water levels continued to rise during the afternoon. Residents shared concerns over recurring flooding during the monsoon, pointing to inadequate drainage infrastructure as a long-standing issue that worsens the impact of heavy rainfall.

Local authorities have been monitoring the situation and assessing the extent of the damage. Although there have been no reports of loss of life, officials remain on alert as more rainfall could further aggravate conditions in low-lying areas.

The incident once again highlights the vulnerability of several towns in Manipur to flash floods during the monsoon season and underscores the urgent need for improved urban drainage systems and better flood management measures to reduce the impact of extreme weather events.
