Five Suspects Released On Bail After Suspected Bomb Plot At RAF Fairford

A UK counterterrorism investigation into a suspected plot targeting RAF Fairford, an airbase used by US forces, has raised fresh questions after five British men arrested near the facility were released on police bail. The men remain under investigation as authorities examine whether the incident involved a foreign state, a proxy network or another motive.

The five suspects, all British nationals from London and aged between 23 and 25, were arrested early Sunday after police received a 999 call about three suspicious vehicles travelling towards the base. They were initially detained over suspected offences under the Explosives Act and later investigated on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act.

The call came from a local farmer who said she found the road and driveway near her home blocked by vans and saw a group of hooded and masked men. She said some ran into fields and towards a neighbouring village after seeing her vehicle. The woman later said she believed her call may have “foiled” the suspected plans and claimed there were more than five men at the scene.

Authorities declared a major incident, deployed armed police and an Army bomb-disposal team, and evacuated residents from around 85 households in Whelford. A robot was used to examine the vehicles, while a police cordon remained around the three vans. Residents were later allowed to return, with reports indicating that no viable explosives had been found.

The decision to release the five men on bail has become one of the biggest questions surrounding the case. Counter Terrorism Policing chief Laurence Taylor said they were released after extensive interviews and inquiries, but stressed that this did not mean the investigation was over. The men remain subject to stringent conditions on their movement and contact with others.

Taylor said investigators were considering “every possible angle”, including whether the suspects were acting as proxies or individuals working knowingly or unknowingly on behalf of a foreign state. Possible links to Iran, Russia or militant groups are being examined, but British authorities have not established that a foreign government was behind the incident.

US President Donald Trump said he was surprised the suspects had been released, adding that he would not have done so. He also said the suspected plot “might” be connected to Iran and claimed the men had been under observation. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio separately said the incident “clearly involves the hands of a foreign actor”, but did not identify the actor or provide publicly available evidence.

Iran has denied involvement, while UK officials have pointed to the broader threat posed by Iranian-linked activity. The incident has also prompted questions about whether British authorities had prior intelligence, particularly after residents reported heightened security around Fairford in recent weeks. The farmer questioned why there was an apparent delay before the evacuation, while Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said she had only a “partial picture” of the operation.
