Security forces have arrested five militants belonging to two banned insurgent outfits in Manipur's Imphal West and Imphal East districts , police said on Saturday, as authorities continue efforts to curb insurgent activities amid the state's prolonged ethnic unrest.

According to police, three active members of the outlawed People's Liberation Army (PLA) , including a woman, were apprehended during separate operations conducted on Thursday. Two of the arrested cadres were allegedly involved in extorting money from clinics and pharmacies in Imphal West district. Another PLA member was arrested from Sanjenbam Maning Leikai in the same district.

In a separate operation, two active members of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (PWG) were arrested from their residences on Wednesday. Security personnel recovered three hand grenades, seven detonators , and a demand letter from their possession, police said.

The arrests are part of ongoing security operations across Manipur following the outbreak of ethnic violence in May 2023 . The conflict between Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities has claimed more than 260 lives and displaced thousands of residents, triggering one of the state's most serious crises in recent decades.

While security agencies continue to target militant networks, extortion rackets, and illegal arms movements , the deeper political and ethnic conflict remains unresolved . Analysts note that lasting peace will require not only law enforcement action but also meaningful political dialogue, reconciliation efforts, and long-term solutions addressing the grievances of the communities involved.

Authorities have stated that search and combing operations will continue across vulnerable areas to prevent further violence and maintain public order.
