Five Dead, One Missing After Boat Capsizes in Yamuna in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur

A boat tragedy in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur district has taken a devastating turn, with officials confirming that five bodies have been recovered and one person is still missing after a vessel capsized in the Yamuna River during a routine village crossing.

The incident occurred on Wednesday evening in Kutubpur Patiya hamlet under Bhauli gram panchayat in Kurara area, when around nine villagers were returning from a river island after purchasing cucumbers and muskmelons. Around 7 pm, the overloaded boat reportedly lost balance midstream and overturned in the fast-flowing river, throwing all passengers into the water.

Soon after the accident, boatman Dheeru managed to rescue three passengers alive. However, several others were swept away by strong currents.

In the latest update, rescue teams have recovered five bodies during intensive search operations , while one person remains untraced . Officials said identification procedures are underway for the deceased.

Those involved in the incident included children and adults, among them Akanksha (9), Rani (9), Brijrani (25), Labhyansh (5), Mahesh (6), and Aditya (11), highlighting the presence of multiple minors among the victims and raising concerns over safety standards in rural river transport.

Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) continue search operations along downstream stretches of the Yamuna using boats and divers, as strong currents and low visibility hamper efforts.

Senior district officials and police remain deployed at the site, with the state government directing that rescue and recovery operations be carried out on a “war footing” until the last missing person is accounted for.
