Five Dead, 12 Injured as Crane Crashes at Telangana Industrial Unit
A tragic crane collapse at an industrial unit in Telangana’s Rangareddy district has turned into a major safety and accountability concern , with five migrant workers dead, several injured, and a criminal case now underway.
The incident occurred on Monday evening in Mahalingapuram village near Shankarpally, where a heavy-duty crane crashed onto a temporary shed at a prefabricated structure manufacturing facility during strong winds and rainfall . At least 17 workers had taken shelter inside the shed when the structure was struck, trapping them under debris. Police confirmed that two workers died on the spot , while three others succumbed to injuries during treatment , taking the toll to five. Twelve others sustained injuries and are currently undergoing treatment.
All the victims were migrant labourers from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Odisha , once again highlighting the vulnerability of interstate workers employed in hazardous industrial environments. Authorities initiated rescue operations immediately, shifting the injured to nearby hospitals and beginning identification procedures for the deceased.
A case has been registered under negligence-related provisions of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 304A (causing death by negligence) . However, the FIR has been filed against the management and unidentified persons , with no individuals named so far . Officials said this is standard procedure in the early stages, as investigators work to establish who was directly responsible for operations, safety compliance, and crane handling at the site .
Crucially, the ownership of the company operating the unit has not yet been officially disclosed , leaving a key gap in accountability. While the facility is identified as a prefabricated structure manufacturing unit linked to construction supply chains , authorities have not confirmed whether it belongs to any major corporate entity. There is also no verified evidence linking the company to any minister or MLA , despite unconfirmed claims circulating in some quarters.
The issue has reached the state government, with Telangana Labour Minister G Vivek Venkatswamy visiting the injured workers and assuring full support to the victims’ families . He has ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident , focusing on whether safety norms were violated, machinery was properly maintained, and operations continued despite adverse weather conditions .
As of now, no ex gratia compensation has been officially announced by the company , and the government has also not publicly specified any compensation amount, though assistance has been assured. The bodies of the deceased have undergone postmortem, and procedures are underway to hand them over and transport them to their native states .
Experts say the accident underscores deeper structural issues in India’s industrial ecosystem, where migrant workers often face inadequate safety training, weak enforcement of labour protections, and limited oversight in high-risk operations . In sectors involving heavy equipment like cranes, strict adherence to safety protocols especially during extreme weather is critical , and any lapse can have fatal consequences.
With the investigation ongoing, attention is now firmly on fixing responsibility, establishing ownership, and determining whether negligence played a role . The findings are expected to shape not only accountability in this case but also future enforcement of safety standards in prefab and construction-linked industries across Telangana .
