First Vande Bharat sleeper set for December launch after final retrofitting

India’s first Vande Bharat sleeper train is now in its final stage of preparation and is expected to be launched next month, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has confirmed. The train is currently undergoing minor retrofitting work to enhance passenger comfort and ensure that it meets the highest standards of safety and convenience.

During an interaction with reporters, Vaishnaw explained that after the testing of the first rake, experts suggested certain improvements to the bogie and seating layout. Though the issues were minor, they are being treated as “major” because the Railways wants to deliver a product that sets a new benchmark for long-distance train travel. “We don’t believe in shortcuts. Our goal is to build a train for the next generation,” he said.

Prototype under modification

The first sleeper rake, considered a prototype, is presently with Bharat Earth Movers Ltd (BEML) for modifications. BEML is manufacturing 10 Vande Bharat sleeper trains, and the prototype was returned to the company after detailed trials conducted by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) and the Commissioner of Railway Safety. A BEML official said it is normal for a prototype to undergo thorough testing on all safety and comfort parameters before mass production begins.

Key safety & design upgrades

In a written communication to RDSO on October 28, the Railway Ministry approved a 16-coach Vande Bharat sleeper train with multiple upgrades for future rakes. These include:

• Arc Fault Detection Device – to prevent electrical fire breakouts

• Fire-survival cable for CCTV systems

• Relocation of AC duct

• Third-party audit of European standards for fire protection (EN 45545) and crash safety (EN 15227)

A critical observation was also made regarding the emergency alarm button, which was found hidden behind the upper berth connector console—making it difficult to access during emergencies. The ministry has instructed that this be relocated to a visible and accessible area in all future coaches.

Route yet to be finalised

While the launch is confirmed for December, the route is still under consideration. Some possible options include Delhi–Patna and Delhi–Howrah, but officials are yet to confirm the inaugural journey.

A step towards New-Age Rail travel

The sleeper version of Vande Bharat has missed multiple deadlines, the most recent being October 15. However, with final corrections underway, the train is now on track for its debut. Once launched, it will mark a major shift in Indian railway travel, combining speed, comfort and safety in a modern overnight journey experience.

The Railways believe it will set a new standard for long-distance travel in India, bringing the Vande Bharat series closer to the vision of next-generation rail commuting.
