First ever visit by Indian vice president to Sri Lanka marks new diplomatic push

Indian Vice President C P Radhakrishnan met Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in Colombo on Sunday, holding wide ranging discussions on development cooperation, humanitarian concerns, and ongoing bilateral initiatives between the two neighbouring countries.

The Vice President, on a two day official visit , was received at the Bandaranaike International Airport by Sri Lankan Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage and other senior officials. Notably, this is the first ever visit by an Indian Vice President to Sri Lanka , marking an important milestone in bilateral relations.

During the meeting, both leaders reviewed key India supported projects, including the Indian housing initiative and development works under a USD 450 million assistance package aimed at rebuilding cyclone affected regions, particularly those hit by Cyclone Ditwah. The discussions also focused on rehabilitation efforts in areas with significant Indian origin Tamil communities.

C P Radhakrishnan reaffirmed India’s commitment to its Neighbourhood First policy , stressing the importance of stronger civilisational ties, economic cooperation, and people to people connectivity . Both sides highlighted the deep historical and cultural bonds shaping India Sri Lanka relations.

A key part of the talks focused on the fishermen issue in the Palk Strait , a long standing and sensitive concern where fishermen from both countries are often detained after crossing maritime boundaries. The leaders stressed the need for a humanitarian approach , keeping in mind the livelihoods of coastal communities.

The Vice President is also scheduled to meet Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya and take part in the exchange of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors.
