FIRs against Social media handles as Noida labour protests see clashes
The Uttar Pradesh Police on Monday said it is registering FIRs against two social media handles for allegedly spreading rumours linked to the recent factory workers’ protests in Noida , even as authorities sought to contain unrest and restore normalcy.
In an official statement, the police said demonstrations were reported at multiple locations across Noida , with only one site witnessing violence . The situation there was brought under control using minimum force , officials added, firmly clarifying that no firing took place during the incident.
“Action is being taken against those spreading false and misleading information and attempting to incite people,” the statement said, urging citizens to refrain from sharing unverified content and help maintain peace.
Earlier in the day, large groups of workers from various industrial units gathered in different parts of the city, demanding a wage hike and improved working conditions. The protests escalated at some locations, leading to incidents of arson, vandalism, and traffic disruption , prompting swift police intervention.
Labour unrest in industrial hubs like Noida is not uncommon and is often rooted in long-standing concerns over low wages, rising living costs, job insecurity, and delayed payments . Workers in sectors such as manufacturing, electronics, textiles, and contract-based industries frequently raise demands for better pay, job stability, and safer working environments .
The current protests are believed to be driven by mounting economic pressures, including inflation and stagnant wages, which have intensified dissatisfaction among factory workers. In several cases, contract labour systems and lack of formal grievance mechanisms further aggravate tensions, leading to periodic demonstrations.
Police also indicated that there were attempts by external elements to instigate unrest, though details remain under investigation.
Authorities reiterated their appeal for calm, stressing that law and order remains under control, while warning of strict action against those spreading misinformation or attempting to inflame the situation.
