Fire breaks out at Hindu school teacher's home in Bangladesh

A fire gutted the home of Bikash Ranjan Deb , a Hindu schoolteacher at Gowainghat High School, in the Sylhet district on Thursday afternoon, leaving property worth around 5 million takas (approximately ₹3.2 crore) destroyed.

According to local police and Deb himself, the blaze was caused by an electrical short circuit , with no evidence of foul play. Sub-Inspector Didar confirmed that the fire was accidental, and Deb stated that he had no personal or family enemies. He emphasized that his neighborhood is home to Hindus and Muslims living in harmony , reinforcing that the incident was a tragic mishap rather than a targeted attack.

Videos circulating on social media show residents and the fire service working together to control the fire, preventing further destruction. Despite this, misinformation quickly spread online , with some posts falsely claiming that the fire was an Islamist arson attack targeting another teacher . Authorities clarified that these claims were untrue.

The incident occurs amid growing concerns over the safety of minority communities in Bangladesh. Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal , speaking at the weekly press briefing, highlighted the recurring attacks on minorities and their homes, calling for such incidents to be addressed swiftly and firmly.

While Deb’s fire appears to be accidental, the episode underscores how easily misinformation can spread , especially in sensitive communal contexts. It also highlights the vulnerabilities faced by minority communities, even when there is no direct threat involved.
