FIR filed against university professor for calling student “Terrorist”

An FIR has been registered against an adjunct professor of a private university for allegedly verbally abusing a student and referring to him as a “terrorist” during a class, police said on Saturday. A video of the incident, which has gone viral on social media , shows the professor admonishing the student for allegedly disturbing the lecture.

The incident occurred on March 24 , and following the complaint, the university suspended the professor on Friday . According to the FIR, the professor repeatedly targeted the student in front of around 60 classmates , saying: “The Iran war happened because of people like you. Trump will take you away. You are idiots; you will go to hell.”

Police said they acted suo moto after reviewing the viral video. The FIR charges the professor under Sections 299 and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita , which pertain to deliberate acts intended to outrage religious feelings and intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace, respectively.

The complaint also raised concerns over alleged deletion of CCTV footage that could have served as crucial evidence. Moreover, some students who supported the victim were reportedly suspended for “talking during class.” Although the professor later submitted an apology to the college , he did not directly apologize to the student , with the department head issuing an apology on his behalf and allegedly cautioning the student against pursuing the matter further.

In response to the incident, the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) has approached the police, demanding strict action against the professor, including a public video apology to the student. Student unions have condemned the hostile and humiliating environment created in the classroom and called for accountability from both the faculty and university administration.

The police have confirmed that further investigation is underway , and university authorities have assured compliance with due process while reviewing the matter.
