FIR Against Abhishek Banerjee Sparks Political Heat in Post-Poll West Bengal
West Bengal Police have registered an FIR against Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP and national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee over alleged inflammatory remarks made during the recently concluded Assembly elections, officials said on Saturday.
The case stems from a complaint filed by social activist Rajib Sarkar at Baguiati Police Station in North 24 Parganas on May 5, a day after the election results were declared. The complainant alleged that Banerjee made provocative statements during several election-related programmes held between April 27 and May 3, which allegedly referred to post-poll violence and the vote-counting process.
The complaint further claimed that some of the remarks were linked to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and could potentially disturb public order and communal harmony.
Following due procedure, an FIR was formally registered on May 15 at the Cyber Crime Police Station under the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate. Police said the case has been booked under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Representation of the People Act , and that the statements are under examination.
The case comes amid a politically sensitive post-election environment in West Bengal, where allegations of violence and heated campaign rhetoric have been a recurring flashpoint between rival parties.
As of now, there was no immediate official reaction from Banerjee or the Trinamool Congress regarding the FIR. Further investigation is underway.
