Finnish Divers Recover Three Bodies In Maldives Cave Diving Tragedy

Finnish technical divers have recovered three of the four Italian divers who died inside a complex underwater cave system in Vaavu Atoll, authorities in Malé confirmed, as one of the most complex underwater recovery operations in the country continues.

The group of five Italian divers went missing last Thursday while exploring a deep cave system at around 50 metres depth. One diver, identified as a diving instructor, was recovered earlier near the cave entrance shortly after the accident. The remaining four were later discovered deep inside the cave’s innermost chamber.

Officials said Finnish cave-diving specialists deployed through the Divers Alert Network Europe located the bodies after a high-risk search operation supported by Maldivian police and military units. Three bodies have now been brought out of the cave, while one remains inside and is expected to be recovered once conditions allow.

The victims were found at approximately 60 metres depth , significantly beyond the recreational diving limit in Maldives, which is capped at 30 metres. Authorities confirmed that all four bodies were located close together in a confined section of the cave system, believed to be part of a multi-chamber structure extending deep underwater.

The operation has been marked by tragedy, including the death of a Maldivian military diver from decompression sickness during an earlier recovery attempt, which forced a temporary suspension of search operations.

Officials also confirmed that weather conditions, strong currents, and limited visibility have complicated efforts in the high-risk underwater cave environment , which experts described as one of the most challenging recovery scenarios in recent Maldivian diving history.

The Finnish team, made up of elite cave-diving specialists, used advanced equipment including closed-circuit rebreathers , allowing extended underwater missions in confined spaces. The team resumed operations after remapping the cave system and identifying safe extraction routes for recovery.

Investigations are ongoing into the circumstances of the accident, including reports that the divers may have descended beyond planned limits during a scientific or exploratory dive.
