Fifth edition of the Red Sea International Film Festival graced by Aishwarya Rai and international stars
The 2025, fifth edition of the Red Sea International Film Festival is underway from December 4 to 13 in Al-Balad, the historic old town of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia - a UNESCO heritage district that now pairs centuries-old architecture with cutting-edge cinema infrastructure. The festival has emerged not just as a regional event, but as a global cinematic gathering bringing together filmmakers, stars, and audiences from around the world.
This edition features 16 films in its main competition, spanning narrative features, documentaries and animation, all competing for the coveted Yusr Awards. Alongside global cinema, there’s strong representation from the Arab world, Asia and Africa reflecting the festival’s mission to build a bridge across diverse film cultures.
The festival is drawing A-list attention. On opening night, international celebrities including Vin Diesel, Dakota Johnson and Ana de Armas walked the red carpet. Meanwhile from Bollywood and India, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan arrived in style and quickly became one of the most talked-about attendees.
Aishwarya’s presence wasn’t just ornamental. In a talk session at the festival she reflected on her long career, describing life as a student always ready to learn. She said that after winning Miss World in 1994, she “incidentally” moved into acting — not because of glamour, but because she embraced every opportunity to grow. At the red carpet, she wore a striking black gown and responded graciously to fans: “Thank you, you are beautiful, you are all beautiful people… your love is overwhelming.”
One of the more viral moments came when Dakota Johnson greeted Aishwarya on the red carpet. In a friendly exchange, Dakota told her about her recent visit to India, saying “We went to Maha Kumbh”, to which Aishwarya responded with warmth: “You did that? Wow!” The two posed together for photographers, and the moment was celebrated online as a memorable “cross-industry” connection.
These interactions of Hollywood and Bollywood stars mingling at a Saudi festival highlight the global ambition of the Red Sea Film Festival. It’s becoming more than regional showcase. Through its red carpet glamour, diverse lineup, and meaningful conversations, RSIFF 2025 is asserting itself as a cultural crossroads: where East meets West, and where cinema is celebrated under a shared global spotlight.
