The 2026 FIFA World Cup will kick off in Group A , with co-host Mexico beginning its campaign against South Africa on June 11 in Mexico City , marking the opening match of the tournament. The group also includes South Korea and Czech Republic , making it one of the most closely watched early-stage line-ups.

As co-hosts, Mexico will play the majority of its matches on home soil, with fixtures scheduled in Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey . A single match outside Mexico will take place in Atlanta on June 18 , featuring the Czech Republic against South Africa. Mexico will also feature twice at the iconic reconstructed Azteca Stadium , which previously hosted World Cup finals in 1970 and 1986 .

Mexico enters the tournament under pressure to improve its recent record. It suffered a group-stage exit in Qatar 2022 and has repeatedly fallen at the Round of 16 stage between 1994 and 2018 , except when hosting, when it reached the quarterfinals in 1970 and 1986 . Much of the nation’s hope will rest on 17-year-old Gilberto Mora , a rising talent who became the youngest player to feature for the senior national team at just 16. The team is coached by experienced tactician Javier Aguirre , currently in his third stint with the national side, who has described leading a home World Cup as the pinnacle of his career.

South Africa returns to the World Cup for the first time since 2010 , when it became the first host nation to exit at the group stage despite a famous win over France. The team, coached by Belgian Hugo Broos , qualified after edging Nigeria in a tough African qualifying campaign. The squad is largely composed of domestic league players and will aim to secure its first knockout-stage qualification.

South Korea arrives as Asia’s most experienced World Cup team, marking its 12th appearance . Its best performance remains a historic fourth-place finish in 2002 , co-hosted with Japan. Led by captain Son Heung-min , and supported by stars like Lee Kang-in and Kim Min-jae , the team entered with mixed recent form, including heavy friendly defeats, but strong unbeaten Asian qualifiers. Coach Hong Myung-bo , a former 2002 semifinal captain, leads the squad in his second tenure.

The Czech Republic returns to the World Cup after 20 years , qualifying via a playoff win over Denmark. The team last appeared in 2006, when it exited at the group stage despite high expectations. Veteran midfielder Vladimír Darida returned from international retirement to strengthen the squad. The team is currently led by 74-year-old coach Miroslav Koubek , who took charge after a turbulent qualifying phase.

Group A promises a highly competitive opening phase , with hosts Mexico under pressure, returning South Africa aiming for redemption, South Korea seeking consistency, and the Czech Republic hoping to revive its World Cup legacy.
