FIFA Tightens Rules: Yellow Card Relief and Strict Red Card Crackdown Ahead of 2026 World Cup
IIn a sweeping overhaul of tournament discipline, FIFA and International Football Association Board (IFAB) have introduced a mix of player-friendly relief and strict on-field conduct rules ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026 .
On one hand, FIFA has moved to reduce unnecessary suspensions by introducing a double amnesty system for yellow cards . Players’ single bookings will now be cleared twice , first after the group stage , and again after the quarterfinals . This ensures that players do not carry minor disciplinary records deep into the tournament, especially with the new 48-team format and an added round-of-32 .
The aim is clear: keep top players available for decisive matches and ensure that knockout games are decided by performance rather than accumulated cautions.
However, while FIFA has relaxed rules around yellow cards, IFAB has taken a much stricter stance on player behaviour .
Under a newly approved regulation, players who cover their mouths while confronting opponents , often seen as an attempt to hide abusive or offensive language, can now be shown a red card . The rule comes in response to growing concerns over verbal abuse on the field , including incidents involving Vinícius Júnior and Gianluca Prestianni during a European club match.
In addition, any player who walks off the pitch in protest of a referee’s decision can also face a red card , a rule that extends to team officials who encourage such actions. The message is firm: while the game is becoming more flexible in managing bookings, discipline and respect remain non-negotiable.
These changes will come into effect at the 2026 World Cup, scheduled from June 11 to July 19 , across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, a tournament expected to be the largest and most closely watched in football history.
Together, the reforms reflect a balancing act, making the game fairer for players , while also ensuring it remains firm on misconduct .
