FIDE World Cup 2025 positions Goa as Emerging International Sports Destination

Goa’s growing reputation as a preferred venue for major international sporting events has given fresh momentum to the state’s push toward sports-driven tourism, with officials noting that events like the ongoing FIDE World Cup 2025 are helping diversify the state’s traditional tourism profile.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who recently attended the tournament in North Goa, said that large-scale sporting events not only support the tourism sector but also inspire youth participation and strengthen India’s sporting culture. He added that Goa’s expanding hospitality network and upgraded sports infrastructure have made it an increasingly attractive destination for global organisers.

The FIDE World Cup 2025, one of the most prestigious global chess tournaments, is currently underway in North Goa. The event began on October 30 and will conclude on November 27, bringing top international players, their teams, officials, and chess enthusiasts to the coastal state. Goa also recently hosted the IRONMAN 70.3 race which was held on October 27, 2024 and has built a regular calendar of international events that complement its status as a tourism hub.

In recent years, the state has hosted the National Games (2023) were held from 26 October to 9 November 2023 and the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Goa Challenge from October 19-22, 2023 , while Indian Super League (ISL) football matches continue to be held annually at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda. Officials said these events are supported by improved facilities and steady government backing under the leadership of the Chief Minister.

Tourism stakeholders believe the FIDE World Cup is further strengthening the state’s positioning as a sports tourism destination. Travel and Tourism Association of Goa president Jack Sukhija said such international events significantly enhance tourist footfall, benefiting hotels, restaurants, and local businesses. He stressed the need for continued investment in sports infrastructure and regular maintenance of existing facilities.

Although the Goa government has not released official revenue data for the FIDE World Cup 2025, industry estimates indicate that the month-long event could generate between ₹62 crore and ₹108 crore for the state’s economy. The projection is based on hotel occupancy trends, peak-season tourism patterns, and comparisons with similar events, including IRONMAN 70.3 Goa and the Chess Olympiad 2022 in Chennai. The expected revenue covers accommodation bookings, food and beverage expenditure, local transport, event logistics, and spillover tourism during the 29-day period.

Tourism Minister Rohan A. Khaunte said Goa must continue expanding beyond its traditional beach-focused identity. “When we speak about expanding the concept of tourism, opportunities like sports tourism are always welcome,” he said, noting that the state is already tapping eco-tourism and heritage tourism as complementary avenues.

Data released by the state government reflects a steady rise in visitor arrivals. Domestic tourists increased by 5.36%, rising from 69.24 lakh in 2024 to 72.96 lakh this year. International arrivals grew by 29.33%, from 2.59 lakh to 3.36 lakh visitors. Tourism contributes an estimated 16.43% to Goa’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) and provides 40–45% of direct and indirect employment.

With the FIDE World Cup drawing global attention and adding to an expanding roster of international sporting events, Goa is positioning itself as a destination where sport, tourism, and hospitality converge to drive sustainable economic growth.
