Feast or famine at the Tollywood box office: Packed releases or no releases

Tollywood’s release calendar has begun to look oddly unpredictable. One week, theatres are overflowing with posters and premieres. The next, they stand unusually silent. There seems to be no middle ground anymore, only extremes.

Just weeks ago, the Sankranti festive window turned into a crowded battleground, with five notable films releasing almost together. The gamble worked. Holiday crowds filled theatres, and trade circles called it a profitable stretch , with steady collections and strong footfall.

But the momentum didn’t last.

Soon after the festive rush, the box office slipped into a dry spell . For nearly two weeks, there were hardly any significant releases. Only two small films arrived last Friday, and both disappeared quietly without creating any buzz among audiences.

Now, the pattern swings back again.

This Friday, theatres are bracing for another flood of releases , with more than half a dozen small and mid budget films lining up. February is traditionally considered an off season , as star-driven projects prefer the bigger summer window. That gap has now become a testing ground for smaller films trying their luck.

Among the upcoming titles, director Guna Sekhar’s Euphoria carries relatively better visibility, with Sara Arjun seen as its main draw. Apart from that, films like Honey, Sri Chidambaram Garu, Barabar Premista, Operation Padma, Yerra Cheera, Garga, Blood Roses, and Laggam Time are also entering the race, though none have generated notable pre-release hype.

Adding to the mix is the Tamil dubbed film With Love , along with re-releases such as Orange, Salaar, and 3 , all competing for limited screens.

The result is a curious situation. When there are no films, theatres struggle. When there are too many, they compete for the same audience. For Tollywood, the real test now is whether strong word of mouth can help any small film break through this crowded Friday and create an unexpected box office story.
