FCRA renewal for RDT expected soon, averts crisis

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs is reportedly close to renewing the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) license for The Rural Development Trust (RDT), an outcome that could be finalized within the next week to ten days.

This development follows a meeting between a delegation of MPs from Anantapur and state leaders with Home Minister Amit Shah. During the meeting, they highlighted RDT's decades of work in rural development in the drought-prone region and requested the renewal of its FCRA permission.

The potential renewal is a significant relief, as delays had raised concerns about RDT's ability to pay salaries to its 691 healthcare professionals and other staff, which could disrupt its critical welfare programs. RDT's initiatives support thousands of people in education, healthcare, and social empowerment.

Each year, RDT invests Rs 30-40 crore in education, providing scholarships and financial aid to thousands of students, including those from underprivileged backgrounds and those pursuing professional courses. The trust has also achieved a 100% school enrollment rate among the Chenchu tribal communities and built infrastructure like a girls' hostel.

In healthcare, RDT operates three hospitals that serve 8.5 lakh outpatients and 60,000 inpatients annually. Their services also include care for 170 children with thalassemia, including bone marrow transplants. The trust also runs educational institutions that support children with disabilities and has organized nearly 90,000 women into self-help groups.
