'Fauzi' Teaser Sparks Controversy Over Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's Portrayal
Prabhas' upcoming period action drama 'Fauzi' has sparked a debate on social media after its birthday glimpse drew criticism over the portrayal of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. While fans praised Prabhas' vintage military look and the film's ambitious historical setting, some viewers questioned a scene that appears to use the freedom fighter to elevate the protagonist.
Released on October 23 to mark Prabhas' 47th birthday, the glimpse, titled 'File No. 25', opens in Berlin on May 29, 1942, depicting a meeting between Bose and German dictator Adolf Hitler during World War II. The historical encounter provides the backdrop for a fictionalised conversation that introduces Prabhas' mysterious character.
During the exchange, Bose reportedly speaks about the Indian operative's abilities and a Bhagavad Gita-inspired code that poses a challenge to British intelligence. However, some viewers believe the sequence gives the fictional hero undue prominence by presenting a respected historical personality primarily as someone who praises him.
The scene has prompted criticism online, with some viewers questioning whether the portrayal does justice to Bose's stature in India's freedom struggle. Several users have objected to the way Netaji appears to praise Prabhas' fictional character, arguing that a respected historical figure should not be used merely to elevate the film's protagonist. Netaji's appearance has also become a talking point, with some social media users comparing his look to that of Dr BR Ambedkar rather than Bose. Some viewers have reportedly demanded an apology from the makers and called for the video to be taken down. The reactions have fuelled a wider debate about the creative liberties filmmakers take when portraying real historical figures in fictional stories.
Meanwhile, Prabhas' fans have defended the film, arguing that historical fiction allows filmmakers to create imagined encounters and characters around real events. The debate has also drawn comparisons with 'RRR', which blended historical personalities with fictional storytelling.
Directed by Hanu Raghavapudi, 'Fauzi' reportedly follows a fictional Indian spy and soldier fighting British rule through espionage, military strategy and daring operations. The glimpse introduces Prabhas as a rebel wanted by the British since 1932.
Featuring Imanvi, Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher and Jaya Prada, the film is backed by Mythri Movie Makers and presented by T-Series Films. It is scheduled for a March 19, 2027 theatrical release. The makers have yet to publicly respond to the controversy.
