Fast-Track GST registration scheme shows strong early results, Enables approvals in under 24 Hours

The Centre’s fast-track Goods and Services Tax (GST) registration initiative has reported significant early success, with over 142,000 applications being automatically approved in the first 15 days of November, constituting more than two-thirds of all registrations during this period. Many of these approvals were completed within 24 hours, while the fastest was processed in just 21 minutes, marking a major leap in ease of doing business and digital governance.

Launched from November 1 under the Central GST (Fourth Amendment) Rules, 2025, the fast-track system uses automation, Aadhaar-based authentication and risk-based assessment to accelerate the registration process. The objective is to encourage easier formalisation of small and medium businesses, reduce manual scrutiny for low-risk applicants and support India’s growing digital economy.

GST, introduced in July 2017, is a comprehensive indirect tax reform replacing multiple central and state levies. It integrates the nation into a unified tax framework, enhancing transparency, compliance, and ease of doing business. The latest reforms under GST 2.0 aim to simplify processes, improve user experience, and reduce bureaucratic delays, especially for start-ups, micro enterprises, and individual service providers.

The new mechanism is governed by two key rules Rule 9A and Rule 14A :

Rule 9A

enables automatic approval of GST registrations within three working days for low-risk applicants, using automated verification of Aadhaar, PAN, and other databases. The rule minimises physical verification and officer-based scrutiny unless red flags are raised by the system.

Rule 14A

introduces simplified registration norms for small taxpayers whose monthly output tax liability does not exceed ₹2.5 lakh across CGST, SGST/UTGST and IGST. It relaxes documentation requirements, ensures a smoother Aadhaar-based sign-up process, and promotes quick onboarding of genuine small businesses through a “green channel”. It also includes provisions allowing applicants to withdraw from the simplified scheme if required.

According to officials, nearly 66 per cent of new registrations in early November were approved within 24 hours, demonstrating the effectiveness of automated risk profiling and digital validation tools. The government expects that nearly 96 per cent of new applicants will ultimately fall under the simplified regime, substantially reducing delays and manual intervention.

The Centre believes the initiative will not only boost formalisation of the economy but also widen the tax base, enhance compliance, and support entrepreneurship. As the system matures, it is expected to further assist in creating a more efficient, transparent, and business-friendly GST ecosystem.
