Fan runs onto pitch, Messi knocked down in Puerto Rico friendly

Football icon Lionel Messi was briefly knocked to the ground after fans stormed the pitch at the end of Inter Miami CF ’s friendly match in Puerto Rico, triggering security concerns during what was meant to be a celebratory exhibition evening.

The incident occurred in the 88th minute at the Juan Ramón Loubriel Stadium in Bayamón, where Inter Miami faced Ecuadorian club Independiente del Valle . As the match neared its conclusion, a fan ran onto the field, reached the centre circle and grabbed Messi around the waist. In the chaos that followed, a security guard intervened, and all three tumbled to the ground.

Messi, however, appeared unhurt. The Argentine great quickly rose to his feet and calmly walked to another part of the pitch as security personnel regained control. Several other fans had also breached the barricades, momentarily disrupting the flow of the game.

The exhibition match had originally been scheduled for February 13 but was postponed after Messi reported leg discomfort during a previous friendly against Barcelona SC . His participation in Puerto Rico had drawn massive anticipation among local supporters eager to catch a glimpse of the World Cup winner.

On the footballing front, Inter Miami secured a 2–1 victory. Santiago Morales opened the scoring in the 16th minute before Messi doubled the lead in the 70th, continuing his influential presence in the club’s pre-season tour.

The Major League Soccer side had begun its domestic campaign with a 3–0 defeat to Los Angeles FC and will next face Orlando City SC on Sunday.

While the result added a positive note to the evening, the pitch invasion once again highlighted the growing security challenges surrounding global superstar Messi, whose presence continues to draw overwhelming fan attention wherever he plays.
