Patrick A Rogers, a famous American travel writer and researcher known for his work on Meghalaya’s “living root bridges,” has died of cardiac arrest while on a field visit in the East Khasi Hills district, officials said on Thursday.

Rogers reportedly passed away on March 21 at Shnongpdeng, near Dawki, while travelling to a remote village. His death was confirmed by associates, who said his funeral is likely to be held on April 3.

He was widely recognised for his extensive documentation of the state’s living root bridges, natural structures formed by guiding the aerial roots of rubber fig trees across streams over decades, a practice perfected by indigenous Khasi and Jaintia communities.

Rogers founded the “Living Root Bridge Project,” an initiative aimed at mapping, documenting, and preserving these unique ecological structures. His work combined scientific research with cultural documentation, highlighting the importance of traditional knowledge systems in sustainable infrastructure.

Through years of exploration and writing, he played a key role in bringing global attention to Meghalaya’s natural heritage. His book, The Green Unknown: Travels in the Khasi Hills , offered detailed insights into the region’s landscapes, biodiversity, and indigenous practices, helping introduce the concept of living root bridges to an international audience.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma expressed condolences in a post on X, describing Rogers as a person deeply connected to the land and its people. He said Rogers’ sincerity, humility, and dedication helped the world recognise the cultural and ecological significance of the root bridges.

Rogers’ work is regarded as instrumental in promoting conservation awareness and sustainable tourism in Meghalaya, while also supporting efforts to preserve the region’s unique bioengineering traditions.
