A family of four , including two minor girls, died in a suspected case of food poisoning after consuming watermelon at their residence in South Mumbai, police said on Monday.

The deceased have been identified as Abdullah (40) , his wife Nasrin (35) , and their daughters Zainab (13) and Ayesha (16) . According to officials, the family had hosted a get-together at their home in JJ Marg on April 25.

During the gathering, the family and five guests consumed a meal that included chicken pulav . However, after the guests left, the family reportedly ate watermelon , following which they began experiencing vomiting and giddiness .

“They were initially rushed to a private hospital , but as their condition deteriorated, they were shifted to JJ Hospital , where all four succumbed,” an official said. Abdullah, the head of the family, was the last to pass away around 10:30 pm on Sunday .

Preliminary findings suggest that the deaths may be linked to the watermelon consumed after the gathering , as none of the guests who ate only the pulav reported any illness.

A post-mortem examination has been conducted , and authorities are awaiting the histopathology report to ascertain the exact cause of death. Meanwhile, police have registered a case of accidental death and launched a detailed investigation into the incident.
