A series of bomb threats at Kanpur Central Railway Station has triggered repeated high-security alerts, causing major disruption and anxiety among passengers and railway staff, and exposing the growing problem of hoax threat calls .

Within 36 hours , two separate alerts forced authorities to carry out full-scale security operations involving the Bomb Disposal Squad , anti-sabotage teams , dog squads and senior police officials. Platforms were partially cleared, trains were delayed and passenger movement was tightly controlled while teams searched waiting halls, parking areas and parcel offices . Both times, no suspicious object was found .

The repeated scares led to missed trains, long waiting hours and panic , especially among families, elderly passengers and daily commuters . Vendors and daily wage workers also suffered financial losses due to temporary shutdowns of station areas during security checks.

Police officials said that fake bomb threats amount to public harassment , draining security resources and diverting manpower from routine law enforcement. “Every call has to be treated as real. We cannot take chances, but hoax calls create unnecessary panic and weaken emergency preparedness,” a senior officer said.

To curb such incidents, police and district authorities have strengthened monitoring of emergency helplines and stepped up technical surveillance . Call detail records (CDRs) are being analysed and CCTV footage is under review to identify those responsible. Authorities are also working with telecom service providers to trace the origin of threat calls faster.

Officials warned of strict legal action against anyone found making fake bomb threats, calling them criminal offences that endanger public order and waste emergency resources. Such acts are punishable under sections of the Indian Penal Code , including provisions related to public mischief, causing alarm, and spreading false information , which can attract jail terms of up to three years, fines, or both . Police said no conviction has been recorded yet in the recent Kanpur incidents , but investigations are underway to identify the callers through call detail records and CCTV footage. Authorities are also planning awareness drives to discourage misuse of emergency numbers and educate people about the serious legal consequences of hoax threat calls.

Railway authorities are reviewing standard operating procedures to balance thorough security checks with minimal disruption to passengers. As investigations continue, commuters remain wary. The repeated bomb scares have turned routine travel into a tense experience, highlighting how false alarms can paralyse public spaces and strain already stretched security systems, even as authorities insist that public safety remains the top priority .
