Fair pay, fixed dates: UP introduces worker-friendly rules
In a decisive push to strengthen labour rights, the Uttar Pradesh government has rolled out a series of strict and worker-centric reforms in Gautam Buddh Nagar, making double overtime pay and timely salary disbursement mandatory across industrial units.
Acting under the direction of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the district administration has moved swiftly to position Gautam Buddh Nagar as a model for labour welfare in the state. The initiative signals a clear shift towards accountability, transparency, and dignity in the workplace .
District Magistrate Meha Roopam led consultations with industrial representatives before issuing a set of firm guidelines aimed at protecting workers from exploitation and delays.
At the heart of the reforms is a strict enforcement of double wages for overtime work , ensuring that employees are fairly compensated for every extra hour. The rule leaves no room for deductions , reinforcing the idea that labour must be paid its due without compromise.
The administration has also made it compulsory for industries to provide weekly holidays . If workers are asked to work on Sundays, they must be paid double the regular wage , further strengthening safeguards against overwork.
Equally significant is the focus on timely wage payments . All industrial establishments are now required to credit salaries in a single instalment by the 10th of every month and issue proper salary slips, bringing financial stability and clarity for workers.
In addition, bonus payments must be directly transferred to workers’ bank accounts by November 30 , ensuring that benefits reach employees without delays or middlemen.
The reforms also place strong emphasis on women’s safety and workplace dignity . Factories have been instructed to set up internal complaint committees led by women to address sexual harassment cases. Complaint boxes have been mandated to allow workers to report issues without fear, while a dedicated control room and helplines have been established for quick grievance redressal.
Officials believe these measures will not only improve working conditions but also set a benchmark for industrial practices across Uttar Pradesh .
In a landscape where wage delays and worker exploitation have often been concerns, this initiative marks a significant step towards building a more fair, transparent, and worker-friendly industrial environment.
