Faf du Plessis opts out of IPL 2026, chooses to play in Pakistan Super League

Former South African captain Faf du Plessis has officially confirmed that he will not participate in the 2026 edition of the Indian Premier League, marking the end of a 14-season journey in one of the world’s most celebrated T20 tournaments. The veteran batter announced that he has chosen not to enter the auction scheduled for December 16, instead committing to a new stint in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Du Plessis, who built a strong legacy with the Chennai Super Kings across most of his IPL career, featured for Delhi Capitals in the previous season and even served as deputy to Axar Patel. In IPL 2025, he had a decent campaign, scoring 412 runs in 14 matches at an average of 34.33 and a strike rate of 126.7, providing stability in the middle order, though he couldn’t deliver a consistent impact in the final stages. However, he was among the seven players released by the franchise ahead of the upcoming mini auction. With this, the former Royal Challengers Bengaluru captain has decided to step away from IPL 2026 entirely.

In an emotional message shared on Instagram, Faf reflected on his long association with the league.

“After 14 seasons in the IPL, I've decided not to put my name into the auction this year. This league has been a massive part of my journey, and India has given me friendships, lessons, and memories that have shaped me as a cricketer and as a person,” he wrote, thanking teammates, coaches, support staff, and fans for their unwavering support over the years.

The 41-year-old emphasised that this isn’t a goodbye, expressing that India will always remain close to his heart. He added that he will return in different capacities in the future.

Looking ahead, du Plessis confirmed he will join the upcoming season of the PSL, a move he describes as an opportunity to embrace a new environment, experience a different cricketing culture, and take on a fresh challenge.

As the IPL prepares for its December auction and teams finalise their strategies, du Plessis’ exit marks one of the most notable developments ahead of the 2026 season.
