Exercise Garuda-25 begins in France as India and France deepen defence partnership

Exercise Garuda-25, a major bilateral air engagement between the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the French Air and Space Force (FASF), has been formally launched, marking a significant step in the expanding defence cooperation between India and France. The IAF announced the commencement of the exercise on Monday, confirming that fighter aircraft from both nations had begun coordinated missions.

The eighth edition of the exercise is being conducted at Mont-de-Marsan Air Base in France, where it will run from November 16 to 27, 2025, as stated by India’s Ministry of Defence.

According to the IAF, Su-30MKI fighters from India and Rafale jets from France “soared into the skies” to undertake joint operations designed to enhance interoperability between the two air forces. The IAF added that the engagement reinforces long-standing defence ties and operational cooperation.

Airlift support for the Indian contingent has been provided by the C-17 Globemaster III aircraft during the induction and de-induction phases, while IL-78 air-to-air refuelling tankers are extending the operational range and endurance of the participating fighter jets.

The Ministry of Defence noted that the exercise includes advanced simulated air combat scenarios, featuring air-to-air engagements, air defence operations, and coordinated strike missions. The drills aim to refine tactical procedures and strengthen joint operational readiness in a realistic combat environment.

Beyond the flying missions, Exercise Garuda-25 also offers extensive professional interaction, operational exchanges, and the sharing of best practices between personnel of both air forces. The IAF said that such engagements underscore India’s commitment to constructive military cooperation with friendly nations through bilateral and multilateral exercises.

India and France share an increasingly robust Strategic Partnership, launched in January 1998, which has grown to encompass defence, civil nuclear cooperation, space, and an expanding Indo-Pacific collaboration. Exercise Garuda remains one of the key practical pillars of this partnership, reflecting the deepening trust and military synergy between the two countries.
