India and Egypt have commenced the fourth edition of their joint special forces exercise, Cyclone, aimed at enhancing operational coordination and strengthening bilateral defence ties . The exercise, scheduled from April 9 to 17 , is being conducted at Anshas, located about 60 km northeast of Cairo and close to the eastern stretches of the Nile River.

According to the Defence Ministry, an Indian Army contingent comprising 25 personnel from elite Special Forces units has departed for Egypt to participate in the drill alongside their Egyptian counterparts. The exercise marks a continuation of expanding military cooperation between the two countries and follows the successful conduct of its previous edition in India in January 2024 .

The primary objective of Exercise Cyclone is to improve joint mission planning capabilities and interoperability between the two forces through the exchange of best practices in special operations. Officials said the participating troops will operate in a realistic operational environment , simulating unconventional and complex scenarios across diverse terrains.

The agenda of the exercise includes a comprehensive range of specialised training activities such as special operations tactics, techniques and procedures , counter-terrorism drills , and hostage rescue missions . Troops will also engage in combat training in desert and semi-desert terrain , alongside urban warfare simulations under unconventional scenarios. The exercise further emphasises joint planning and coordinated execution of missions , while enabling the exchange of professional expertise and operational experiences.

In addition to tactical training, the exercise aims to foster mutual understanding of military traditions and cultures , strengthening camaraderie between the troops. The Indian Army noted that such engagements enhance the ability of both forces to operate together effectively in challenging environments, including desert and urban settings, while reinforcing their shared commitment to regional security and strategic cooperation .

Bilateral exercises such as Cyclone remain a key pillar of defence engagement between India and Egypt, contributing to greater trust, synergy, and long-term military collaboration between the armed forces of both nations.
