
Excise Constable Soumya Succumbs to Injuries After Ganja Smuggler Vehicle Hit
Excise Constable G. Soumya (25) , who was critically injured after being hit by a ganja smuggler’s vehicle during an anti-drug operation in Nizamabad district , succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Hyderabad , late Saturday night.
The incident occurred on January 23 near Madhavnagar , when an excise team was conducting vehicle checks based on specific intelligence inputs about illegal ganja transportation. As officers attempted to stop a suspicious car, the occupants tried to flee at high speed and rammed the vehicle into Soumya, leaving her with multiple serious injuries.
She was initially shifted to a local hospital for emergency care. As her condition deteriorated due to internal injuries, she was later referred to NIMS for advanced treatment. A multidisciplinary medical team placed her on ventilator support and provided intensive care for over a week. Despite sustained efforts, doctors declared her dead at 9:41 pm on January 31 .
After the collision, the smuggler vehicle crashed into an electric pole, allowing police to apprehend two accused persons. Authorities seized 2.5 kilograms of ganja from the vehicle and registered a criminal case. Further investigation is underway.
The death of the young woman constable has triggered widespread grief across Telangana. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy expressed deep shock over the incident and directed officials to take stringent action against those responsible. He assured that the government would stand firmly with Soumya’s family.
Excise Minister Jupally Krishna Rao announced a comprehensive relief package, including ₹1 crore ex-gratia compensation , a government job for her younger brother , and payment of full salary to the family until her notional retirement age . He described Soumya’s sacrifice as a symbol of courage and dedication in the fight against narcotics.
The government has assured enhanced safety measures for excise personnel and warned of strict action against drug trafficking networks. Soumya’s death has left the department in deep mourning, with colleagues and senior officials paying tribute to her bravery and commitment to duty.
