Every laptop counted: GHMC’s digital asset push

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has launched a digital asset tracking system to strengthen efficiency and prevent misuse of electronic equipment. The initiative introduces a digitised inventory that will record all IT equipment purchases, enable real-time monitoring, and ensure timely replacement of outdated or faulty devices.

Under the system, GHMC will track every purchase of electronic peripherals such as CPUs, monitors, cables, laptops, mobile phones, and tablets. In the past, officials and departments acquired these items and the IT wing allocated laptops, tablets, and phones based on roles. However, gaps in records often led to incomplete data and created scope for misuse.

The newly introduced mechanism will allow real-time monitoring and reporting of all assets. It will also facilitate timely maintenance and replacement of devices that are either outdated or non-functional. Officials confirmed that the system will apply across all GHMC departments and to governing officials who receive electronic devices as part of their work.

Earlier, the lack of a comprehensive system meant that despite frequent purchases and distributions, there was no clear record of when and to whom devices were issued. This made it difficult to identify faulty units, manage older equipment, or prevent unauthorized use.

With digital tracking in place, GHMC expects to reduce wastage, repair delays, and resource losses while improving asset lifecycle management. Departments will now be able to identify redundant devices for disposal or upgrade, thereby optimising expenditure on IT infrastructure.

This initiative is part of GHMC’s larger digitisation efforts to modernize administration and improve service delivery. By ensuring that electronic assets are properly monitored, maintained, and replaced when necessary, the civic body aims to strengthen accountability and transparency in governance.
