Everest Witnesses Historic 274 Summits in a Single Day, Six Indians Among Climbers

Mount Everest witnessed a historic moment on Wednesday as 274 climbers successfully reached the summit from the Nepal side , marking the highest number of ascents ever recorded in a single day on the world’s tallest mountain.

According to Nepal’s Expedition Operators Association, the figure includes nearly 150 Nepalese Sherpas , whose role in fixing ropes, carrying supplies and guiding climbers is critical to Everest expeditions. Excluding Sherpas, around 124 climbers were foreign or independent mountaineers. The previous one-day record was 223 summits in May 2019 .

Among the climbers were three Indians Tulasi Reddi Palpunoori, Sandeep Are and Ajay Pal Singh Dhaliwal who became part of the record-setting ascent during the busy 2026 spring climbing season.

Another Indian team from Pune-based mountaineering club Giripremi also summited Everest on the same day. Climbers Vivek Shivade, Mihir Jadhav and Akhil Katkar , along with their Sherpa guides, reached the 8,848.86-metre peak after spending nearly 50 days in the Himalayas preparing for a narrow summit window.

Led by expedition organiser Umesh Zirpe , Giripremi is known for conducting high-altitude Himalayan expeditions and technical climbing missions in India. Zirpe described the summit as a collective achievement made possible by climbers, Sherpas, families and supporters.

The season also saw legendary Nepali climber Kami Rita Sherpa extend his own world record by climbing Everest for the 32nd time .

Meanwhile, Lhakpa Sherpa became the first woman to summit Everest 11 times .

With over 500 climbers granted Everest permits this spring , the 2026 season is already emerging as one of the mountain’s busiest and most record-breaking years.
