Escalating unrest in PoJK, multiple civilian deaths, clashes as protests spread

Tensions in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) escalated on Tuesday, with multiple civilian deaths and widespread clashes reported between protesters and security forces, according to local sources and media posts.

The unrest has been driven by protests led by the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JKJAAC), which has mobilized massive public support across the region. The demonstrations, ongoing for the past three days, have already resulted in more than six casualties and several serious injuries.

Protesters are demanding action on a 38-point charter, which includes abolishing reserved legislative seats for Kashmiri refugees, economic relief measures such as reduced electricity tariffs, subsidized wheat flour, and ending perks for government officials. They are also seeking free education and healthcare services for PoJK residents.

Social media posts highlighted the intensity of the situation. Nadeem reported three young men killed due to firing by security forces, while Zubia Mughal noted ongoing shelling in Dhirkot and Dadyal, and another casualty in Muzaffarabad. Civil society voices stressed that citizens are exercising their right to peaceful protest but are met with lethal force.

The JKJAAC confirmed they are open to negotiations with the government but have set conditions for dialogue. Meanwhile, protesters detained individuals suspected of attempting to create chaos and emphasized their commitment to obtaining fundamental rights without targeting anyone.

The demonstrations are spreading, with marches such as the Neelum caravan and the Long March from Mirpur Division moving toward Muzaffarabad. Clashes with police and intelligence personnel have intensified, with protesters reportedly confronting agents and security forces directly.

Reports also emerged of political detentions, including Raja Amjad Ali Khan, a senior JKJAAC member, who was held at Islamabad Airport with his whereabouts initially unknown.

The situation underscores growing frustration among PoJK residents over unaddressed demands and ongoing restrictions, signaling potential for further escalation if the government does not engage constructively.
