
England Defender Millie Bright Retires, Bids Farewell After Injury Battle
Former England international and long-time Chelsea defender Millie Bright announced her retirement from professional football on Wednesday at the age of 32, bringing an end to a decorated career marked by domestic dominance and international success.
Bright said she had been “ playing injured for the last six years ” and admitted in an emotional message, “ I’m tired. I’m just a human. ” She had been sidelined since February due to an ankle injury and had earlier withdrawn from England’s squad for the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 citing mental and physical health concerns.
One of the most successful players in English women’s football, Bright won eight Women’s Super League titles with Chelsea along with multiple domestic cups, including the FA Cup and League Cup , establishing the club as a dominant force in the league. She also made over 314 appearances for Chelsea , becoming the club’s all-time appearance leader.
At international level, Bright earned 88 caps for England and played a crucial role in England’s historic UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 triumph , one of the country’s biggest football achievements. She also captained England during parts of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup , where the team finished runners-up.
Her consistent performances earned her individual recognition, including an Order of the British Empire in 2024 , along with multiple selections in elite team honours such as the PFA Team of the Year .Chelsea confirmed that Bright will remain associated with the club as a trustee of its foundation and club ambassador , ensuring her continued contribution off the pitch.
“You might be losing me on the pitch, but you’re certainly not losing me as part of Chelsea,” she said, signalling a new chapter beyond playing.
