Empty local train coach derails near Dombivli, disrupts Mumbai rail services
A coach of an empty local train derailed near Dombivli railway station in Maharashtra’s Thane district on Monday morning, disrupting services on the busy Mumbai suburban rail network, officials said.
According to a Central Railway spokesperson, no injuries were reported as the train was empty at the time of the incident. The derailment occurred at 8:09 am when the rake was moving from Kalwa car shed to Kalyan for scheduled operations.
The incident took place on the main line of the Mumbai suburban network , which links Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus with key suburban stretches across Thane and Raigad districts.
Railway officials said at least three local train services were directly held up , while several others experienced cascading delays during the morning peak hours. Preliminary assessments indicate that over 15-20 services on the route were affected due to the disruption.
While Central Railway has not issued an official estimate of losses, transport experts suggest that economic losses from delays on this high-density corridor could run into several crores of rupees , considering lost work hours, productivity setbacks, and operational disruptions during peak commuting time.
Restoration work was taken up immediately, and efforts were underway to normalize services at the earliest. Authorities have also initiated an inquiry to determine the cause of the derailment.
