
Emergence Opens India’s First AI Lab for Autonomous Systems, Driving Advanced Manufacturing
New York-based frontier AI firm Emergence has announced the launch of Emergence India Labs (EIL) , India’s first dedicated research and development hub focused on autonomous AI agents , marking a strategic push to transition the country from its long-standing IT services model to advanced manufacturing and industrial automation .
Backed by tens of millions of dollars in initial inward R&D investment , the lab is expected to scale up to 500 world-class scientists and engineers over the next three to four years. Strategically located near the Indian Institute of Science, the facility will collaborate with academia through joint research programmes, exchanges, hackathons, and summer schools to build a robust talent pipeline in autonomous systems .
Renowned mathematician Siddhartha Gadgil has been appointed Chief Scientist , while continuing his academic role at IISc. The lab is envisioned as more than a research centre; it aims to serve as the nucleus of a broader public-private partnership involving government, industry, and academia to ensure India develops foundational AI technologies domestically .
EIL will focus on building next-generation AI systems capable of operating mission-critical digital infrastructure , including financial networks, telecom platforms, and cloud systems, while also extending into physical AI applications such as robotics, logistics, ports, and factories. The initiative reflects a global shift in AI from training large models to developing autonomous systems that can function reliably in real-world environments .
Emergence CEO Satya Nitta said the company is prioritising systems that can reason under uncertainty and act independently , noting that mastering autonomy in digital systems will enable expansion into advanced manufacturing and infrastructure. He emphasised that India’s next phase of growth must be driven by frontier AI innovation rather than services alone.
The lab will also emphasise formal verification frameworks such as LEAN , ensuring AI systems are mathematically grounded and capable of safe decision-making at scale. This approach separates probabilistic reasoning from deterministic execution, enabling reliable performance in high-stakes environments.
Industry trends underline the significance of this move. AI adoption in Indian manufacturing has surged to 65% in 2024 , up from 45% in 2022, with the domestic AI-in-manufacturing market projected to grow at around 40% annually , crossing $8 billion by 2030 . Globally, competition is intensifying, with China leading in robotics deployment and research output, highlighting the urgency for India to strengthen its position.
Led by global researchers including Dr Prasenjit Dey and Dr Ravi Kokku, EIL aims to support startups with access to advanced technologies, publish cutting-edge research in global forums such as NeurIPS and ICML, and anchor breakthrough innovation within India .
Describing the initiative as a “national-scale scientific moonshot,” Nitta called on investors, institutions, and technology leaders to participate in building a long-term ecosystem. The success of the initiative, he noted, will be measured by how effectively it establishes India as a global hub for frontier AI and autonomous systems research .
