Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has donated USD 276 million to Republican groups since July to support the party’s candidates ahead of the November 3 US midterm elections, emerging as the largest donor to Republican political groups, according to a media report.

The donations have helped fund Republican campaigns across battleground states where the party faces a tough challenge from the Democrats, The New York Times reported on Monday. During the 2025-26 election cycle, Musk has contributed USD 366 million to Republicans, surpassing the USD 290 million he donated to support President Donald Trump’s 2024 election campaign.

According to the report, Musk donated USD 158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, marking the largest single political donation in American history. The amount also exceeded the total funds raised by Democrats from all donors during the summer.

He contributed another USD 76 million to America PAC, the political action committee he founded in 2024 to support Trump. The organisation is actively campaigning for Republican Senate candidates in more than three dozen races.

Musk also donated USD 20 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, the main super PAC supporting House Republicans, USD 10 million to Lone Star Liberty PAC, which backs Republican Senate nominee Ken Paxton in Texas, and USD 10 million to the Republican Governors Association. An additional USD 2 million went to the Republican Attorneys General Association.

“These robust investments have allowed the G.O.P. apparatus to get its message out so Republicans can have a fighting chance to defy history,” Andrew Romeo, a spokesman for America PAC, told the newspaper. Musk, who heads a vast business empire with significant government contracts, has wielded considerable influence in Washington.

Trump appointed him in January 2025 to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), tasked with reducing government spending. However, the two had a public falling-out months later before Musk returned to Trump’s camp.

Trump subsequently honoured Musk with the National Medal of Science, describing the SpaceX chief as a “modern day Edison” during the ceremony recognising six technology leaders.
