Elephant Calf Trapped in 20-Foot Well in Karnataka, Rescue Operation Underway

An elephant calf that fell into an abandoned 20-foot-deep well in Dakshina Kannada district was found to be in stable condition , officials said on Monday, adding that a carefully coordinated rescue operation is underway in the Sampaje range of Sullia taluk.

The incident took place in the Sampaje range of the Western Ghats region , where the calf reportedly slipped into the uncovered well. Despite the fall, officials noted that the animal appeared alert and healthy , bringing relief to the rescue teams and locals monitoring the situation.

A 10-member team of forest personnel , led by the Sampaje range forest officer Manjunath, has been engaged in the operation since early morning. According to officials, continuous efforts are being made to ensure the calf remains calm inside the deep structure.

As part of immediate support measures, the team has been sprinkling water into the well to keep the animal hydrated and reduce stress. Officials said the calf has shown signs of responsiveness, which has encouraged the team further.

To facilitate a safe exit, two excavators have been deployed at the site. The machinery is being used to carefully dig around the well and construct a gradual earthen ramp , enabling the calf to climb out without causing injury or panic.

Forest officials said the rescue operation is progressing steadily and cautiously, given the sensitive terrain and the need to avoid disturbing the animal so as not to trigger panic, stress, or sudden movement that could cause injury . They expressed confidence that the calf will be rescued safely if the current efforts continue without complications.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and further updates are expected as the operation continues in the Western Ghats forested region of Karnataka .
