Election machinery activated: Returning officers named for 294 West Bengal constituencies
The Election Commission of India has taken a crucial step in preparing for the upcoming West Bengal Legislative Assembly election by appointing Returning Officers (ROs) for all 294 Assembly constituencies in the state.
According to officials, the notification for the appointments was issued after the West Bengal government provided officers of the required seniority, following the poll body’s insistence that only adequately ranked officials handle the crucial electoral responsibilities. Returning officers play a central role in the election process, overseeing nominations, ensuring adherence to election rules, and supervising the counting of votes.
Sources said that while some officers appointed this time had also served during the 2023 electoral cycle , the majority are new appointments , reflecting a refreshed administrative setup for the upcoming polls. The move is seen as a significant administrative step as the election machinery gradually shifts into full gear.
The development comes shortly after a high-level team from the Election Commission visited West Bengal to assess the state’s preparedness for the elections. Officials have indicated that the assembly polls could likely be held in April , potentially alongside elections in Tamil Nadu , Assam , Kerala , and the Union Territory of Puducherry .
However, the run-up to the elections has not been without friction. The Election Commission and the All India Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal have recently been at odds over several issues , including the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voters’ list . The revision exercise has sparked political debate in the state, with both the ruling party and opposition raising concerns over electoral procedures.
Adding another dimension to the political climate, sections of the opposition have indicated that they may seek the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar through Parliament , alleging a partisan approach in handling electoral matters.
With the appointment of returning officers now complete, one of the most critical administrative preparations for the West Bengal elections is officially in place, signalling that the state’s electoral machinery is steadily moving towards the next democratic contest.
