A devastating accident at a stone quarry on the outskirts of Bengaluru claimed the lives of eight daily wage labourers , most of them from Bihar , after a massive granite rock collapse on Thursday morning. The tragedy has once again raised serious concerns over worker safety in quarrying operations, with allegations of illegal quarrying and negligence coming under scrutiny.

The accident occurred at Madapattana , on the border of Bengaluru Urban and Bengaluru South districts. According to police, the workers were carrying out routine quarrying operations when an enormous rock, reportedly falling from nearly 40 feet , crashed onto them. Several labourers were trapped beneath the fallen boulders and died on the spot.

Rescue teams and police personnel rushed to the site and launched an extensive operation to clear debris and search for survivors. The injured were shifted to a private hospital, where one more labourer later succumbed to injuries, taking the death toll to eight . Officials said the exact number of injured was still being verified, though several workers sustained serious injuries and some remain in critical condition.

The force of the collapse also completely mangled vehicles stationed at the quarry. A tractor at the site was smashed into pieces, highlighting the sheer intensity of the accident.

Initial information suggests that around 18 workers , including labourers from Bihar and North Karnataka , were present at the quarry when the incident occurred. Authorities are also working to inform the families of the deceased, most of whom are migrant workers from Bihar. The tragedy left the area engulfed in grief as relatives and co workers gathered at the site.

Expressing sorrow over the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured. In a post on X, he said he was deeply pained by the loss of lives in the Bengaluru quarry accident and extended his sympathies to the victims' families.

Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar described the incident as deeply saddening and stressed that quarry owners have a responsibility to ensure the safety and security of workers engaged in such hazardous operations. He warned that the government would take appropriate action against quarry operators found violating safety regulations.

Meanwhile, Yeshwanthpur MLA S T Somashekar alleged that illegal quarrying had been continuing in the area for several years despite repeated complaints. He claimed to have raised the issue in the Karnataka Assembly on multiple occasions and alleged that officials from the police, forest and mining departments were complicit in allowing such activities to continue.

Somashekar also recalled an earlier incident in which a leopard allegedly died due to blasting carried out by quarry operators. He demanded strict legal action against those responsible and cautioned against allowing influential individuals linked to the case to escape accountability.
