The race for direct qualification to the 2027 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup is intensifying, with teams battling for a place among the top eight in the ICC ODI rankings before the qualification deadline.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed that the ODI rankings as of September 30, 2026, will determine the eight teams that earn automatic entry into the tournament. These teams will join co-hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe, who have already secured their spots by virtue of hosting the event.

The 2027 ODI World Cup will feature 14 teams and will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. However, despite being a co-host, Namibia will not receive automatic qualification because it is an Associate Member nation. Instead, it must secure its place through the Cricket World Cup Qualifier pathway.

At present, India, New Zealand, Australia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and England occupy the leading positions in the ODI rankings and are well placed to qualify directly. Afghanistan and Bangladesh currently hold the remaining automatic qualification spots, but their positions are not guaranteed.

According to cricket rankings expert Bertus de Jong, the battle remains wide open, particularly for Afghanistan. He noted that several upcoming bilateral ODI series could significantly influence the rankings before the cut-off date, meaning teams just outside the top eight still have a realistic chance of moving into the qualification positions.

One of the biggest stories in the qualification race is the situation of the West Indies, the two-time ODI World Cup champions. The Caribbean side currently sits outside the top ten and faces the prospect of having to progress through the qualification tournament if it fails to improve its ranking.

With crucial ODI matches scheduled over the coming months, every result could prove decisive in shaping the final list of teams that earn direct entry to cricket’s premier 50-over event.
