Eid prayers held under tight security in West Delhi’s Uttam Nagar after recent tensions
Muslims offered Eid-ul-Fitr prayers in West Delhi’s Uttam Nagar on Saturday amid heavy security deployment, days after a localised clash left one person dead and heightened tensions in the area.
Authorities enforced strict security arrangements across Hastsal village and adjoining localities, with a large presence of Delhi Police and paramilitary forces, including the Rapid Action Force. Barricades were placed at key entry and exit points, and identity checks were conducted, with access restricted in certain stretches to verified residents.
Police said the situation remained under control throughout the day. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka), Kushal Pal Singh, stated that prayers were completed without disruption and that routine patrols and picketing would continue. He also urged residents not to pay heed to rumours circulating on social media.
Despite the heavy security presence, Eid prayers were conducted peacefully across mosques in the area. Celebrations, however, remained subdued in view of the recent incident and the prevailing atmosphere.
A video circulating online showed locals showering flower petals on police and security personnel, thanking them for maintaining order during the festival. Police also detained around 95 individuals for allegedly raising provocative slogans and attempting to disturb peace.
Residents expressed mixed sentiments. While some highlighted continued communal harmony and support from neighbours, others said the heavy deployment and recent events had created a sense of unease.
Community representatives confirmed that all mosques in Uttam Nagar observed Eid peacefully. They added that earlier tensions had been fuelled by rumours and external elements, but the situation had stabilised due to prompt police action.
The heightened security follows a March 4 incident in JJ Colony, where a 26-year-old man died after a dispute between two families escalated during Holi celebrations . The incident triggered protests and led to the burning of vehicles linked to the accused. Police have since arrested multiple individuals in connection with the case.
Officials said the area continues to be closely monitored, with surveillance in sensitive pockets and efforts underway to curb misinformation and prevent any escalation.
