Egypt announces new gas discovery in Western Desert

Egypt is currently the fourth-largest natural gas producer in Africa, after Algeria, Nigeria, and Mozambique, and ranks among the world’s top 20 countries in proven natural gas reserves. With over 63 trillion cubic feet of confirmed reserves, the nation has leveraged both onshore and offshore exploration to transform its energy landscape in the past decade. The Western Desert, where the Badr-15 field is located, has increasingly emerged as a vital exploration zone, complementing the major offshore fields in the Mediterranean, such as the giant Zohr field.

The country’s energy policy focuses on maintaining self-sufficiency in gas while expanding exports. Egypt exports liquefied natural gas (LNG) primarily to Europe, Asia, and parts of the Middle East, with key destinations including Italy, France, Spain, Turkey, and India. Its two major LNG terminals, Idku and Damietta, are central to these exports and have helped position Egypt as a critical alternative energy supplier to Europe amid shifting global supply chains.

This latest discovery aligns with Egypt’s broader economic and strategic goals. By enhancing domestic production and maintaining strong export revenues, Cairo aims to consolidate its role as a regional energy hub connecting African gas reserves with global markets. The Badr-15 field, though smaller compared to offshore mega-projects, underscores Egypt’s continued success in maximizing its exploration potential across diverse geological regions.
