Eggs Thrown at Mahua Moitra During Nadia Meeting, TMC MP Alleges BJP Role

TMC MP Mahua Moitra on Wednesday alleged that BJP workers threw eggs at her during a party meeting in West Bengal's Nadia district despite the presence of police personnel, and said she faced the protesters in the manner of a freedom fighter facing bullets.

Moitra, a two-term MP from Krishnanagar, said around seven to 10 BJP workers, including local party office-bearers, entered the area where her programme was being held in Tehatta and allegedly pelted eggs at her.

In posts and a video shared on X, Moitra said she had informed the police about her visit and was accompanied by four personnel as directed by the court. She alleged that more police arrived during the confrontation but forcibly put her into a car instead of controlling the protesters.

The TMC leader also referred to a recent Supreme Court observation concerning her plea against a Calcutta High Court direction to appear before the police in a case linked to an allegedly provocative Facebook post.

During an August 7 hearing, the Supreme Court bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Sheel Nagu had orally questioned Moitra's apprehension that eggs could be thrown at her, referring to freedom fighters who had faced bullets. The court subsequently declined to interfere with the High Court's direction, following which her counsel withdrew the plea.

Moitra said Wednesday's incident occurred despite the court-related arrangements and alleged that protesters shouted "Jai Shri Ram" and slogans against her.

West Bengal BJP chief spokesperson Debjot Sarkar condemned egg-pelting at a woman, if the incident was confirmed, but denied that BJP workers were involved. He also questioned whether the incident had actually occurred as alleged.

Moitra later urged the West Bengal Police and the state DGP to register an FIR, claiming that the alleged attackers were BJP workers whose faces were visible in videos.The incident follows a recent BJP protest against Moitra in Nadia's Chapra area, where demonstrators reportedly waved black flags and raised "go back" slogans as she left a party meeting. Rival political camps have traded allegations over attempts to disrupt programmes in the district.
