EFLU Campus Clash Between ABVP and NSUI Leaves Seven Injured
Tension prevailed at the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) campus in Hyderabad after a clash between members of the ABVP and NSUI left seven students injured. Police have registered cases against both groups in connection with the incident, which took place on August 14.
According to police, tensions had escalated a day earlier during a protest organised by ABVP members at the women’s hostel. A verbal altercation between students affiliated with the two organisations reportedly followed, setting the stage for the confrontation the next day.
NSUI members alleged that ABVP activists made caste-related remarks against a student and assaulted the vice-president of the EFLU students’ union. They further alleged that their members were attacked with sticks and glass bottles, leaving several students seriously injured.
ABVP’s EFLU unit, however, gave a different account of the events. It said two female students had approached hostel authorities on August 13 seeking permission to stay, during which a warden allegedly made inappropriate remarks. ABVP members questioned the conduct and staged a peaceful protest in support of the students.
The organisation said the protest also highlighted concerns over basic hostel facilities, including the availability of clean toilets and safe drinking water. ABVP alleged that NSUI members attempted to disrupt the demonstration through arguments and abusive language.
Police said four NSUI students and three ABVP students were injured in the clash. Four NSUI members suffered serious head injuries and were admitted to a hospital.
Based on complaints and counter-complaints, cases were registered against both groups at the Osmania University Police Station. Police said seven ABVP members were arrested and remanded in judicial custody, while seven NSUI members were also arrested and subsequently released on station bail.
The ABVP’s EFLU unit has demanded a fair and impartial investigation and called for the immediate and unconditional release of its seven arrested members.
