Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya has called for an education system rooted in creativity and critical thinking, asserting that learning must move beyond theoretical confines to meet the demands of the modern world.

Speaking at the valedictory session of the North East Education Conclave 2025 held in Guwahati on Saturday, Acharya said the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is a timely initiative that equips students with the skills needed for a rapidly evolving global landscape. The conclave, organised by Pragjyotispur University on its foundation day, brought together educationists, policymakers and academic leaders to discuss transformative educational reforms for the Northeast in alignment with NEP 2020.

The Governor highlighted the transformative power of knowledge, noting that true education shapes character and nurtures innovation. He said NEP 2020 serves as a foundational step toward achieving the national vision of Viksit Bharat@2047, fostering a self-reliant and innovation-driven economy.

Drawing from India’s ancient educational heritage, Acharya referred to historic institutions like Takshashila, Nalanda and Vikramshila, where learning was holistic and aimed at advancing human welfare. He stressed that today’s students seek critical, experiential and creative learning through real-life engagement and technology-enabled environments.

Advocating for modern learning tools such as smart classrooms, digital libraries and open e-learning platforms, the Governor emphasised the need for community participation in education. He noted that Assam’s universities have begun implementing field-driven, project-based learning, with nearly 20 per cent of coursework in social sciences and commerce tailored to local needs.

Addressing contemporary global challenges such as climate change, health crises and social harmony Acharya urged educators to prepare students as innovative solution-providers and entrepreneurs, not just job seekers, to build a resilient and future-ready nation.
