ED Probes Suspected Investment Fraud, Raids Eight Locations in Kolkata
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday conducted searches at eight locations in Kolkata as part of an ongoing money laundering investigation into suspected financial fraud involving the collection of crores of rupees from the public on promises of high returns, an official said.
The searches began on Monday morning and covered multiple premises, including one in Tollygunge and several others along Sarat Bose Road in South Kolkata, according to a senior ED official. The federal agency is examining the suspected movement of funds collected from investors and their alleged diversion into real estate development and other business ventures, sources said.
ED officials are scrutinising bank account details, financial records and documents relating to various transactions to establish the flow of money and ascertain the possible involvement of individuals and business entities in the alleged irregularities.
“Our officials are verifying the financial records managed through the bank account details, and documents related to transactions to trace the movement of funds and determine the possible role of individuals and business entities in the alleged irregularities,” the official said.
The searches were initiated based on leads gathered during earlier operations, the official added. Monday's action follows a series of similar searches conducted by the ED last month at 17 locations in Kolkata and other parts of the country. During those operations, investigators examined the financial trail linked to the suspected fraud to assess its scale and identify individuals or entities that may have benefited from the transactions.
The latest searches indicate that the agency is continuing its efforts to establish the complete money trail and determine whether funds collected from the public were channelled through business ventures to conceal their alleged origins. The investigation is also expected to help establish the extent of the suspected financial irregularities and the roles, if any, played by those connected with the transactions.
Further details about the identities of the persons or entities under scrutiny, the total amount involved and any possible arrests were not immediately available. The allegations are under investigation, and the searches do not by themselves establish wrongdoing by any individual or business entity.
