Economic weaponisation reshaping world order: EAM Jaishankar

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday said India is engaging with international partners more intensively from a position of strength , even as the world enters a phase of deep uncertainty marked by economic coercion, geopolitical rivalry and strategic competition.

Addressing the inaugural Global Economic Cooperation (GEC) conference , a high-level forum bringing together global policymakers, diplomats, investors and business leaders, Jaishankar said the world is witnessing the weaponisation of production, finance, market access and export controls, reshaping global economic relations and intensifying instability.

“From a position of strength, India is engaging international partners more intensively. This is demonstrated in the recently concluded trade deals,” he said, highlighting New Delhi’s growing diplomatic and economic footprint.

He warned that the global system is undergoing a profound transformation. “ The world has entered a volatile and uncertain era, possibly the most turbulent in living memory. The established global order is clearly changing; replacements are hard to create and we appear to be headed into a long twilight zone ,” Jaishankar observed.

The external affairs minister said these shifts demand greater resilience in supply chains, diversified partnerships, and strategic autonomy, especially as nations increasingly deploy economic instruments as tools of geopolitical leverage.

The three-day Global Economic Cooperation conference , hosted in Mumbai, is aimed at redefining economic diplomacy, capital alignment and international cooperation in a rapidly evolving multipolar world, with senior policymakers, CEOs and investors deliberating on trade, supply chains, infrastructure financing and digital connectivity.
